from the Old Testament book Leviticus 20.18: 21 Holiness of Priests. - [..] The Lord said to Moses: "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: [...] Do not marry a prostitute or have been dishonored, nor a woman divorced from her husband, because I am holy their God [...] If the daughter of a priest is prostitution dishonor, disgrace his father [...] marry a virgin. You may not marry nor a widow nor a divorcee, or a disgraced, nor a prostitute, but will his wife a virgin of his people. So do not dishonor his seed among his people, for I am the Lord who sanctify him. "
From the Gospel according to Matthew:
First Timothy 3:1 -" Some The saying is: If one aspires to the office of bishop, want a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober, courteous, hospitable, apt to teach, not given to wine nor violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money that governments well his own house and takes his children in subjection with all reverence, not a novice, so, now swollen with pride he fall into condemnation the devil. "
More than a thousand years later Pope Gregory VII decreed celibacy for Catholic priests, perhaps his word was worth more than that of the Lord? Apparently for some people.
